How-to Use the Critical Path

Updated over 2 months ago

The Critical Path helps you identify and visualize the sequence of tasks that directly determines your project’s completion date. By highlighting these crucial tasks, you can focus your attention where it matters most and ensure your project stays on schedule.

What Is the Critical Path?

The critical path is the chain of dependent tasks that, if delayed, will delay the entire project. Monitoring the critical path allows project managers to prioritize resources and actions to keep the project on track.

How to Show the Critical Path

  1. Open Your Project’s Gantt Chart

    • Navigate to the project where you want to analyze the timeline.

    • Switch to the Gantt Chart view to see all tasks laid out across the project timeline.

    • Click on the Filters dropdown.

  2. Enable the Critical Path View

    • Locate and click the Show Critical Path button at the top of the Gantt Chart interface.

    • The chart will update to visually highlight the critical path and related tasks.

Understanding Visual Indicators

When the Critical Path is enabled, tasks and groups are color-coded for clarity:

Color

Meaning

Red

Tasks on the critical path, these must be completed on time to avoid project delays.

Blue

Individual tasks that are currently in progress or pending but not on the critical path.

Green

Task groups, collections of related tasks for organizational clarity.

Grey

Completed tasks, providing a quick visual reference for progress made.

Tips for Managing the Critical Path

  • Monitor Red Tasks Closely:
Any delay in red-highlighted tasks will directly impact your project’s finish date.

  • Adjust Schedules Proactively:
If a critical task is at risk, reassign resources or adjust dependencies to avoid delays.

  • Use Color Coding:
Quickly scan the Gantt Chart to distinguish between critical, in-progress, grouped, and completed tasks.
